Our membership is constantly seeking advice, support, training and information from service providers to help further their business practices. If you or someone you know would be interested in participating as a one-time sponsor at a WIC monthly meeting, held the third Thursday of each month, please contact us for more information.

The year is off to a great start with our well-received meetings on Best Practices, Speed Networking, and Presenting Yourself in the Best Possible Way, plus the special workshop on Negotiations held in February. Board and committee members are continuing to create new and unique ideas to educate our members and improve their professional skills.

One of the areas we promised to work on is to increase, among the Bay Area community, the awareness of WIC as a resource of consulting talents. To that end, we have created an Advisory Board of senior leaders who will be providing insight into creating more awareness of WIC. We are delighted that invitations so far have been accepted by:

  • Erna Arnesen, VP, Channels, Fujistu Softek
  • Susan Burnett, VP, Talent, The Gap
  • Mark Cannice, Ph.D., Director, USF Entrepreneurship Program and Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship, School of Business and Management, University of San Francisco
  • Vickie Mitchell, Senior Manager, Business Advisory Services, Grant Thornton, and FWE Advisory Board
  • Denise Peck, VP, Marketing Operations, Cisco
  • Anita Rao, VP, Enterprise Software, Garage Technology
  • Bette Young, Director of Human Resources, WJ (formerly Watkins Johnson)

We are still actively in discussions with several other business leaders and plan to meet with our new Advisory Board in the May timeframe.

To continue to educate our target audience on the wealth of talent in our organization, we are launching our new WIC Best Practices Direct newsletter for business professionals this month. To evangelize WIC in the community, we are actively identifying press and speaking opportunities for the WIC Board. I will be representing WIC and speaking on upward mobility, job opportunities, and balancing work and family life at the upcoming First Annual Forum for Women in Trade, Business, and Development to be held April 17, 2004, at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

We are also highlighting our members' speaking engagements, articles, and press quotes on the WIC Website to showcase the expertise and talent we have in the organization. Continue to let our website chair, Dana Dowell know when you have news and speaking engagements to announce. Please note that In addition, we have identified an exciting opportunity for our members to build their credibility with Bay Area entrepreneurs by contributing articles to the SVASE Entrepreneurial Workbook.

WIC can always use volunteers to make our programs a success. It's a great way to meet other WIC members, extend your network, and build your business, too. Contact me if you'd like to work on one of our many committees.

Sincerely,
Deborah Henken
President, Women in Consulting

WIC February 2004 Meeting
Putting Your Best Foot Forward —
Marketing Yourself by Making a Powerful First Impression
February 19, 2004

Melinda Henning and Sue Connelly were a powerful, dynamic team called "Clear Eye to Help You Fly." As a spoof on the popular new "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" TV program, their approach was to makeover two volunteer WIC entrepreneurs. No stone went unturned as they analyzed the live presentations and communications materials of these women.

SVASE Entrepreneurs Workbook — Don't miss an exciting and rare opportunity to share your expertise with start-up entrepreneurs!

Earlier this month, we announced our affiliation with SVASE (Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs), an organization of 600+ members who are dedicated to helping early-stage entrepreneurs across all technology sectors. The WIC-SVASE agreement includes co-marketing of Websites and events — with discounts for both organizations' members — and WIC member access to SVASE's Entrepreneur's Workbook, an online "nuts and bolts" guide to getting a company off the ground.

One result of the affiliation is the opportunity for WIC members to market themselves to this large entrepreneurial community by contributing to the Entrepreneur's Workbook! Every month, SVASE posts articles online in a members-only area of the SVASE Website. Once a year, the collection of business tip articles is published and is available for sale.

WIC is collecting short, 100-word articles from our members to submit to SVASE. Articles, written in a specific template, will be submitted on the first of each month. If you are interested in contributing, please contact Celia Lawren, WIC Director of Marketing, at celia@lawrencommunications.com with the topic you wish to cover. She will share the specific guidelines with you and review all articles for submittal to SVASE. You get a byline for your business and for WIC.
